China censors communism

January 23rd, 2007 · No Comments

The late Paulo Francis (.br), one of the most intelligent and sarcastic conservative pundits in our country’s history, once said that “the left is incompatible with those who shower every day. The best anti-communist propaganda is to let communists talk”. He should know, since he had been a trotskist for a good part of his life.

Apparently, the People’s Republic of China agrees with mr. Francis, since they’ve been going out of their way to bring down the Marxists.org site, which carries a huge material related to communism:

In early November we came under sustained denial of service attack from Internet hosts in China attempting to exploit a misconfiguration in our server’s operating system. The nature and origin of the attack, our previous history with the PRC, and the experience of others suggest that this maybe politically motivated and directed by the Chinese government.

While they probably wouldn’t be able to carry such attacks against sites like Wikipedia or YouTube, this is not good news for any small player defending causes that don’t sit too well with the PRC, like Free Tibet or those who want an independent Taiwan. This is taking censorship to a whole new level, and I sure as hell hope no one else decides to go this route. Spammers already make life on the net bad enough.
