Hey, and welcome!
My name is Solon Brochado. I’m a 27 years old journalist from Porto Alegre, capital of Brazil’s southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul. I’m also a nerd, which is why my main interest is in technology, new medias and anything remotely geeky. In fact, I keep a personal blog, in Portuguese, dedicated to these subjects, as well as a Newsvine account, where I post articles in English about technology in Brazil which I think might be of interest to a larger audience.
I’m also editor of PAlegre, a blog dedicated to the city I live in, fashioned after Gothamist and such. We have a Flickr account, as do I. You can find out what kind of music I like in my Last.fm profile, and my favourite links in both del.icio.us and StumbleUpon.
I’ve worked as an intern and a webwriter for Terra’s news portal, and done some production and CSS-hacking jobs for W3Haus on sites like Tramontina and GrĂªmio FBPA, the soccer team I root for. I’m currently unemployed, which means I work as a freelancer whenever the opportunity presents itself, which lately has meant quite a few works for Capricho and Mundo Estranho, two magazines published by Editora Abril. Mainly, they’re technology-related pieces, though some have been offered to me for my apparently good skills in using Google to research data.
As for this blog, it exists for two reasons. When I started it, it’d take me a couple of hours to write a post that should have taken me no more than ten minutes if written in Portuguese. And also, I had promised myself I would keep Caveat Emptor, my other blog, strictly technology-related, hoping not to scare readers who couldn’t care less about politics. So, now I get to train my English-writing skills - and I am currently writing almost as fast in English as I do in Portuguese - and speak about politics as much as I’d like, without worrying about alienating eventual readers.
And if, in the meantime, some people get to read and like what I write, even better.
